James Mills attested for the Royal Highlanders, 5 December 1914, aged 27 years. He served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, in the French theatre of war from 1 June 1915. The Battalion were heavily engaged on the Somme from 6 July 1916 onwards. Mills was discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve in February 1919.
