James Hutchison was a native of Edinburgh, and served during the Great War with the 8th (Service) Battalion, Royal Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 31 December 1915. At the end of 1917, the Battalion was engaged at Havrincourt, and during the Battle of Passchendaele.
