Robert Whitby, alias Bryant, was born in the Parish of Harlton, Cambridge, and enlisted into the 73rd Foot at Cambridge on 17 April 1846, a labourer by trade, aged 20. He served at the Cape of Good Hope for 6 years 5 months and in the East Indies for 1 year 6 months. Promoted to Corporal on 30 January 1853, to Sergeant on 2 July 1855, and to Colour-Sergeant on 25 April 1861, he took part in the Kaffir war of 1850-53 and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with Gratuity of £15 in June 1866. He was discharged on 30 April 1867, and was appointed 3 days later to be a Sergeant on the Permanent Staff of the 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, a position he kept until 2 May 1882, when he was finally discharged on termination of his engagement. Sold with copied discharge papers.
