Edward Carroll served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 12 October 1914. He was killed in action, 25 September 1915. On the latter date the Battalion were engaged in the first day of the Battle of Loos. At the start of the day the Battalion’s strength was 21 officers and 796 other ranks, at the end of the day’s fighting the Battalion had suffered casualties of 363 killed, missing or wounded.
Private Carroll is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
