Neil Gentle served during the Great War with the 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Royal Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 29 August 1915. He transferred to the 1/4th (City of Dundee) Battalion, which amalgamated with the 1/5th to form the 4/5th Battalion in March 1916. He was killed in action whilst serving with them, 14 November 1916. On the latter date the Battalion were engaged on the Somme.

Private Gentle is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

James Meakin Withinshaw was born in Glasgow. He served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, Royal Highlanders in the French theatre of war. Withinshaw was killed in action, 13 October 1915.

Private Withinshaw is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

James Melough was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He served during the Great War with the 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Royal Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 2 May 1915. He was killed in action 30 November 1915, on the latter date the Battalion were in the trenches in the Somme area.

Private Melough is buried in the Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
