William Gray was born in Strathmiglo, Fifeshire, and enlisted in the Royal Highlanders at Lochgelly. He served during the Great War with the 7th (Fife) Battalion, Royal Highlanders (Territorial) on the Western Front. Gray died of wounds 31 November 1918, and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France.
