Marie Tussaud, née Grosholtz (1761-1850), wax modeller, first exhibited her work in London in 1802. After touring the UK and Ireland she took a lease at the Baker street bazaar in 1832. New galleries on the present site on the Marylebone road were opened in 1884. To raise funds for the repair and restoration of Marylebone Church, a bazaar was staged in November 1887 in the Portman Rooms on Baker street and a portion of the old Marylebone Gardens restaged there
