William Frederick Cogan was born in Bantry, county Cork, and enlisted at Cork for unlimited service in the Bengal Sappers and Miners on 3 December 1846, aged 20 years. He embarked for India in the Sea Park, arriving on 30 June 1848. Promoted to Corporal in 1850 and Sergeant in 1851, he was wounded by a gunshot in the left forearm at Futtehpore Sikri, outside Delhi, on 12 September 1857, and as a result was discharged 7 February 1859.
His medal was sent to him but ‘returned not found’; it was finally issued to him ‘found 1 February 1864’.
