James Tuckerman was born in the Parish of Blackhauton, near Dartmouth, Devon, and attested for the Royal Engineers at Devonport on 10 February 1856, aged 21 years 8 months, a quarryman by trade. He served with the 21st Company R.E. in India for 2 years and 214 days, including operations at Jhansi, 25 March to 3 April 1858 (Medal with clasp). He was subsequently stationed at Mauritius for 5 years and 325 days, and the remainder of his service was at Home. He was discharged at Chatham on 23 July 1877, then being in possession of five Good Conduct Badges, the Indian Mutiny medal and clasp Central India, and the medal and gratuity for long service and good conduct.

21st Company was one of only 3 R.E. companies to serve in the Indian Mutiny, the first ever R.E. companies to serve in India since the Indian armies had their own Sappers & Miners which had been deployed in previous operations. Corporal Patrick Sleavin, of the 21st Coy., won the Victoria Cross at the capture of Jhansi. Sold with further research including copied discharge papers.
