Alexander Ramsey (also spelt as Ramsay on the roll) served in No. 5 Company, 13th Battalion, Royal Artillery. The battery arrived from China in September 1857 and saw very extensive service during the Mutiny; as well as operations for the Second Relief of Lucknow in November 1857, it was in action at the Second Battle of Cawnpore, December 1857; the actions at Bognipore and Miangunge, February 1858; the operations for the capture of Lucknow, March 1858; the actions at Barr, Azimghur and Jugdispore, April 1858; the action in Jugdispore Jungle, May 1858; the crossing of the Gumti at Sultanpore, August 1858; the actions at Amithi and Shunkerpore, Rehora, and Keoli, November 1858; and the actions at Burgidiah, Musjidiah and Banki, December 1858.
