George Jones was born in St. Coygon, Monmouth, Wales around 1878 and attested for short service with the South Wales Borderers at Brecon on 29 September 1899, having previously been serving in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion South Wales Borderers. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War and afterwards transferred to the 1st Battalion in India.

He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 31 August 1914, and was wounded on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He was discharged on 21 September 1917 due to being no longer physically fit for war service.
