Alfred Ranford was born in Birmingham in 1884 and, while already serving with the Militia (6th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment), attested there for the South Wales Borderers on 20 December 1902. He was posted to South Africa on 9 June 1903, returning to England 9 June 1904. He then served in India between 23 January 1907 and 22 December 1910.
Following the outbreak of the Great War Ranford was mobilised on 3 August 1914 and served on the Western Front from 12 August 1914, where he suffered a gun shot wound to the left leg on 3 November 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres. He returned to England and was posted to the 3rd Battalion on 25 February 1915. He served a further period of four years with the Army Reserve before being discharged on 24 January 1919 having served over sixteen years with the Regiment, and received a Silver War Badge.
