Bertie William Chacksfield was born in Willesden, Middlesex, on 7 August 1888 and attested for the South Wales Borderers on 30 November 1905. After seeing service in India he served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 August 1914. Wounded, he subsequently transferred to the Home Service Employment Company. Disabilities listed at the time of his discharge in 1919 include gun shot wound to the back, gun shot wound to the head and heart disease amounting to 40% disablement. Despite this he later worked as a postman in London and received the Imperial Service Medal in 1948 (London Gazette 15 October 1948). He died in Surrey in June 1976.
