Hans George was born in Shankhill, Belfast on 19 January 1858, and enlisted into the Munster Fusiliers on 19 January 1876, aged 18 years. Having reached the rank of Colour Sergeant in July 1882, he was appointed Paymaster Sergeant in September 1882 and transferred to the Army Pay Corps in November 1883. Appointed Staff Sergeant Major in 1894, he served with the Corps in South Africa between 20 October 1899 and 10 April 1901, and was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 8 February 1901). George received L.S. & G.C. medal in July 1894 and the M.S.M. with an annuity of £5 on 8 May 1901. He was appointed to the Yeomen of the Guard in 1908 and received the Coronation Medal in 1911. He died on 11 July 1921.
