He was on duty at Albert Street police station, Manchester, in September 1867, having been sent with the Regiment from Salford Barracks. With men of the 72nd, the 57th manned the walls of the New Bailey Prison during the execution of the three ‘Manchester Martyrs’ convicted of the murder. Later the Regiment was in Ceylon from 1873-79, and in South Africa from February to October, 1879. He was appointed to Her Majesty’s Body Guard on 2 July 1891, and died on 8 April 1901.
