Advanced Warrant Officer Class II, he transferred to the Royal Sussex Regiment as Company Sergeant Major, before being commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery on 17 March 1918.
Fred Battarbee, a native of Eastbourne, Sussex, attested for the Sussex Yeomanry at Brighton on 16 September 1915, and served with them during the Great War in Egypt and Palestine from 27 March 1916. He was wounded by gunshot to the upper left arm during the battle of Beersheba on 31 October 1917, and having been evacuated to Alexandria, arrived back in England on 21 December of that year.
