A 19th century large gold double portrait enamelled serpent bangle, 1840s, centred with an oval locket inset with a glazed portrait of a young lady, wearing a white lace head-dress and pink roses in her hair, within a hinged textured gold collet mount, opening to reveal a corresponding portrait of young gentleman, with trimmed beard, wearing white soft collar, blue carat and patterned smoking jacket, the locket mounted within a blue enamel entwined serpent hinged bangle, the serpent with engraved gold scrolling detail and cabochon ruby eyes, the bangle inscribed to the inside ‘Le 12 Avril 1844’, outer diameter 7.5cm. £1,500-£2,000

The portrait bangle was probably a wedding commission, the date ‘12 April 1844’ assumed to be the date of their marriage.
