James Maguire (variously McGuire and Macguire) was born in the Parish of Inniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland, and enlisted for the 6th Foot at Dundee on 28 January 1847, aged 17 years 10 months. He served 8 years 6 months at the Cape of Good Hope, including the Kaffir War of 1850-53, and 4 years 6 months in India, including service in the Indian Mutiny, and was engaged at the battle of Baraown, near Jugdespore, under Colonel Corfield. He was discharged at Sheffield on 12 May 1868, Free to Pension, intending to reside in Jersey C.I. and in possession of ‘four Good Conduct Badges and Indian & Kaffir Medals’. Sold with copied discharge papers.
