John McNee, a labourer from Lanark, Glasgow, enlisted into the 45th Foot at Dublin in December 1841. He served 16 years 1 month at the Cape of Good Hope, mainly in Natal. He saw service on the Bushman River, Cape Colony, from October 1848 to March 1849. In September 1851 he was part of the expedition sent to relieve Major Walden, the British administrator of the Orange River Sovereignty at Bloemfonein, who was besieged by Boer farmers and beset with problems from the native tribes. The result of the Boer revolt of 1851-52 was the signing of the Sand River Convention, handing the colony over to Boer administration and the withdrawal of the British presence in Bloemfontein. McNee returned to England in June 1859, and was discharged on 15 September 1863. Sold with detailed muster research.
