Joseph Newman was born in the Parish of Todingham, Gloucestershire, and enlisted into the 45th Foot at Gloucester on 30 April 1842, aged 22 years 6 months, a labourer by trade. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope for 16 years 1 month, taking part in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53. He was discharged Free to Pension at Curragh Camp on 23 June 1863, his conduct being ‘very good’ and in possession of 5 Good Conduct Badges. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal at Armagh on 7 June 1863. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
