Patrick Murray was born at Anna, Curragh, Ireland, and enlisted into the 73rd Foot in Dublin on 7 February 1845, aged 20, a miner by trade. He sailed with the Regiment in the Apollo in May 1846, and landed at Monte Video. From there they sailed to the Cape and landed at Great Fish River on 30 August 1846. He took part in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53, and in Cathcart’s expedition to subdue the Basutos under Moshes, November 1852 to January 1853. He took his discharge on payment of £15 at King William’s Town on 9 May 1853. Sold with a 73rd Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead and detailed muster research.
