David McDonald was born in the Parish of New Mills, near Aberdeen, and enlisted there for the 45th Foot, aged 18, a blacksmith by trade. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope for 15 years 11 months, but from the musters it appears that he was mainly stationed in Natal, although he was on detached duty at Bushmans River, January to March 1849. He was discharged Free to Pension on 9 December 1859, being ‘in possession of a War Medal for the Kaffir War of 1850-53.’ The medal roll also lists another D. (Donald) McDonald who took part in the Kaffir War of 1846-47. Sold with copied discharge papers and detailed muster research.
