James Prinsep, FRS (1799-1840), assay master at the Calcutta mint from September 1819, was the advocate behind the uniform coinage of the EIC, first mooted in 1833. A significant numismatist who studied coins of Bactria, the Kushans and the Guptas, part of his collection is now in the British Museum
