Frederick William Nicholson was born at Dalton, Lancashire, and attested for the Royal Lancaster Regiment at Lancaster. He served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 31 July 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
