Harry Carpenter was born at Lee, Kent, and enlisted into the Oxfordshire Light Infantry in London on 3 November 1898, aged 18, a sweep by trade. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa from February to July 1900, and with the 2nd Battalion in India from November 1901 to January 1907. He was discharged on termination of his first period of engagement on 2 November 1910. Sold with copied discharge papers with confirm Q.S.A. and clasps.
