Alfred George Brain was born in Bristol in 1874 and attested there for the Oxfordshire Light Infantry on 19 December 1892. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India from 26 January 1895 to 10 February 1902, and saw active service with the Mohmand Field Force and the Tirah Expeditionary Force 1897-98 (entitled to an India General Service Medal with clasps Punjab Frontier 1897-98 and Tirah 1897-98). He proceeded to South Africa on 11 February 1902 and served there for seven months. Returning home he transferred to the Army Reserve on 14 December 1902, and was discharged on 18 December 1904, after 12 years’ service.
