110 no-clasp Queen’s South Africa Medals were awarded to the ship’s company of H.M.S. Beagle.

Percy William Tregillis was born in Hastings, Sussex in December 1875 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in September 1891. Having joined H.M.S. Raleigh in April 1893, he was advanced to Ordinary Seaman in December of the same year and was actively employed in the Gambia operations of 1894.

Further active service followed aboard the Beagle off South Africa from May 1901 until the end of hostilities, initially in the rate of Petty Officer 2nd Class but latterly as a recently advanced Petty Officer 1st Class.

In October 1903, Tregillis was advanced to Acting Gunner, and between 1912-17 he was lent to the Royal Australian Navy, returning to the Royal Navy with an appointment in the destroyer Boxer in February of the latter year. Removing to the battleship Glory nine months later, he was promoted to Chief Gunner in September 1918, and was lent to the Royal New Zealand Navy 1920-24, which latter appointment witnessed his promotion to Lieutenant in August 1922.

Tregillis retired in 1927 and was advanced to Lieutenant-Commander on the Retired List in August 1930.
