617 no-clasp Queen’s South Africa Medals were awarded to the ship’s company of H.M.S. Gibraltar.

William John Lyons was born in London in March 1882 and enlisted in the Royal Marines in September 1899. Posted to the Portsmouth Division, he subsequently served in H.M.S. Gibraltar from March 1901 to May 1904, including her commission off South Africa, and was discharged in 1912.

Lyons was recalled in June 1916, when he was posted to the Chatham Division, and from August of that year until the end of hostilities, he served aboard the battle cruiser Repulse. He was demobilised in February 1919.
