Frederick Redclift, Albert’s father (see previous Lot), was born in Bideford, Devon in October 1856 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class in January 1873. Having quickly witnessed active service in the same rate in H.M.S. Tamar during the Ashantee operations of 1873-74, he gained advancement to Able Seaman in January 1880, and was awarded the Egypt Medal for his services in the Nile Flotilla during the Gordon Relief Expedition, and at the battle at Abu Klea on 17 January 1885, when he was one of just four R.N. officers and 55 ratings present. Returning to the U.K. in the Invincible, he served in the Coast Guard 1887-1893, following which he was appointed to Pembroke I as an Able Seaman (Pensioner) until discharged ashore in January 1898.
