Edward Thomas Harris was born in about 1820 and joined the Royal Marines at Chatham on 11 November 1831 as a Drummer, and transferred to the ranks seven years later. He served as a Private in the Royal Marines in H.M.S. Cambridge during the operations off the coast of Syria in November 1840 (Medal with Clasp and Turkish Medal). Harris was promoted to Corporal in 1843, to Sergeant in 1844, to Colour-Sergeant in 1849, and to First Drill at the R.M. Depot in 1857. Here he served until discharged to pension, at which time he held the rank of Acting Sergeant-Major. He received the Naval L.S. & G.C. medal in January 1860 together with a £15 Gratuity, and was awarded the Royal Marine Meritorious Service Medal and Annuity of £10 in 1889. He died at his home in Chatham on 17 March 1895, aged 75. Sold with research including copied article form The Times giving an account of the presentation of his L.S. & G.C. medal, and obituary from the Globe and Laurel.
