William Munro Ross was born on 25 March 1858, son of David Ross, Tain, Scotland. Ross had a long career in the Merchant Navy, becoming a Chief Engineer with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve as an Engineer on 30 June 1889, becoming Senior Engineer on 31 December 1891. During the Boer War he served as Chief Engineer of the P. & O. steamship Simla and subsequently received the Transport medal with clasp for S. Africa 1899-1902. For his services he was also made a Companion of the Bath (London Gazette 26 June 1902). William Ross died on 15 June 1914.
