The regiment gained its colourful sobriquet, ‘The Bloody Eleventh’ for its costly participation at the battle of Salamanca, 22 July 1812.

Colour Sergeant James Bungay was born in Lidsay, Chichester, Sussex. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted at Plymouth, aged 17 years, and attested for the 63rd Foot on 16 May 1794. He was wounded in action on 4 November 1794, suffering a gun-shot wound to the right leg. He transferred to the 11th Foot on 5 August 1796. Serving with them he was wounded in the left knee at Salamanca, 22 July 1812. Serjeant Bungay was discharged on 17 March 1819.
