George William Garratt was born in Newport Pagnall, Buckinghamshire and enlisted in the Imperial Yeomanry in London in March 1901, aged 23 years. Posted to the 2nd Battalion of the 21st (Cheshire) Company, I.Y., he served in South Africa until May 1902, thereby gaining further entitlement to the “South Africa 1901” and “South Africa 1902” clasps. Garratt was discharged back in the U.K. in September 1902.
