William Dearnaley was born in Hollingsworth, Cheshire in July 1891 and enlisted in the Cheshire Regiment in January 1917. Having then got married during his final home leave, he was embarked for France as a member of the 13th Battalion, and died of wounds on 11 August 1917, the day following an attack launched by his unit in the battle of Passchendaele. He is buried in Branhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
