The recipient was taken prisoner at Grootvlei on 26 December 1900, while serving in ‘F’ Company, 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade, under Captain Radclyffe, which unit ‘made a fine stand ... Sergeant Angell and 18 men were surrounded, and after firing away all their ammunition were taken prisoners’ (The Rifle Brigade Chronicle, 1900, refers); in addition, eight men were killed and 31 wounded (see Jason Grover’s article, The Rifle Brigade near Grootvlei, Boxing Day 1900, O.M.R.S.
