Norris Irven was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 14th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, direct from the 3rd Battalion, in which he had served as a private soldier, in June 1915, and later served in the 5th (Reserve) Battalion.

Charles Joseph Russell served in the 23rd (North Western) Battalion (T.F.), Rifle Brigade, in India, the above described award being his only entitlement. He was appointed a Quarter-Master & Lieutenant in December 1915.
