Albert Keene was boprn in Shoreditch, Middlesex in April 1859 and enlisted as a boy recruit in the Rifle Brigade in March 1874, aged 14 years. Appointed a Bugler later that year, he was advanced to Corporal (Band) in October 1885 and to Sergeant Bugler in June 1886. All in all he served with the Colours for 22 years, including postings to Egypt, India and South Africa, but his only medal entitlement was his Army L.S. & G.C., which he received in 1894. Keene was discharged at Mullingar in March 1896.
