Freeman Garneys was born near Stradbroke, Suffolk and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in January 1888, aged 23 years, having earlier seen service in the City of London Artillery Volunteers. Embarked for India in January 1889, where he served in the 3rd Battalion, he returned home via Aden in January 1906 as a Quarter-Master Sergeant and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal later that year. Garneys, who had no further medal entitlements, was discharged at Borden, Hampshire in February 1909 and died at his residence in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex in February 1935.
