Sold with a copied newspaper article from The Lee Journal, which includes a photograph and states: ‘... His old friends at the Paris House found him exceedingly modest as to the circumstances under which he was awarded the medal. It transpired that he had served as a bomber, had led a platoon of bombers and had “brought a few Germans home with him.”

A subsequent entry in the same newspaper on 15 May 1918 states that Sergeant Tom Sargent has been reported as being a prisoner of war.
