V. J. Prout was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Wiltshire Regiment on 2 November 1940 and was appointed a War Substantive Lieutenant on the same day. After serving in the Second World War, he was released in 1947. Recalled a a Lieutenant (Short Service Commission) in August 1951, he was promoted to Captain in May 1952 and retired on 17 August 1954. The Wiltshire Regiment did not serve in Malaya as a unit.
