Ralph Bacon Prince was born on 4 February 1914. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Loyals on 30 August 1934. Prince was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1937, Acting Catain in July 1940, Temporary Captain in October 1940, Captain in August 1942, Acting Major in June 1946, Temporary Major in September 1946, and Major in December 1961. It is speculated that the recipient was taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore - this accounting for his lack of promotion during the years 1942-45. He was specially employed with the Malaya Military Forces from September 1952.
