John Melville Baird was born on 26 March 1927. He served in the ranks of the Army for 1 year, 80 days. He was commissioed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army on 20 January 1946 and promoted a War Substantive Lieutenant in July 1946. He was posted to the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in December 1947 and received a regular commission as Lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment in June 1949. Served as Temporary Captain, August 1951-October 1952 and March-April 1953. Transferred to the Reserve on 23 April 1954.
