Major G. R. Hickey was first gazetted as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment in 1935, transferring to the 4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment the following year, prior to being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, Devon Regiment in 1939, Captain in August of the same year and Temporary Major in 1943. During the Malayan Campaign he served for eighteen months as a Captain attached to the Malay Regiment from January 1948. In 1950 he was appointed Assistant Adjutant and Assistant Camp Commandant at the Joint Services Staff College, later becoming a Company Commander at the same establishment. His name does not appear in the Army List after 1961.
