Michael Fleming was born at Ballinrostig, Cork, on 17 October 1858, and joined the Royal Navy on 17 October 1876 (ADM 188/96). He served aboard Condor at the bombardment of Alexandria when Lord Beresford attacked a fort with Condor alone, causing the Admiral to make the famous signal “Well done, Condor”.
