John Brown was born in Eccles, Kelso, Roxburgh, and enlisted into the Royal Artillery in June 1862. He transferred to the Military Store Staff Corps in July 1868, and to the Army Service Corps in April 1870. He was promoted to Sergeant in March 1879 and received his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1882, after service in South Africa and Egypt. He was discharged at Woolwich in December 1884 and drowned in Hong Kong Harbour on 5 February 1888.
