Elliot Minto Playfair was born in Calcutta on 6 September 1828, and attended Addiscombe in 1844-45. He entered the Army in 1846 and served in the second Burmese war in 1853 with A Company 2nd Battalion, Madras Artillery, commanding the bullocks (Medal). During the Indian Mutiny he raised and commanded a horse field battery of the Nagpore Irregular Force, and was often engaged with the rebels in inconsiderable actions (Medal without clasp, known to survive). Playfair saw no further active service but rose to become a Colonel Commandant, Royal Artillery, in March 1894, and was promoted to General in the same year. General Playfair died at St Andrews, Scotland, on 29 May 1899.
