John Smith served in A Battery B Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery, which, at Ahmed Khel, recovered one of the guns it had lost (as 1 Troop, 1 Brigade Bengal Horse Artillery) in the retreat from Cabul in 1841. The battery now celebrates the anniversary as “Ahmed Khel Day”.
