A scarce Albert Medal awarded to Lieutenant C. Foy, 10th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, for repeatedly intervening to save lives during a bombing practice on 7 September 1917

Albert Medal, 2nd class, for Gallantry in Saving Life on Land (Presented by His Majesty to Lieutenant Clifford Foy, 10th Battalion, The Manchester Regt. for gallantry in saving life at bombing practice on the 7th September 1917) contained in its original red leather fitted case of issue, with ‘G.V.R.’ cypher to outer lid, extremely fine £2500-3000

‘While bombing practice was being carried out under the supervision of Lieutenant Foy, Manchester Regiment, one of the party withdrew a pin from a live bomb and, when in the act of throwing it, dropped the bomb and fainted, falling upon the bomb. Lieut. Foy at once lifted the man off the bomb and carried him to a place of safety.

A short time afterwards, another man threw a bomb which hit the parapet and fell back into the pit. He made no endeavour to run out of the pit, whereupon Lieut. Foy entered the pit and dragged him out.

On the same occasion a third man threw a live bomb which hit the parapet and rolled to the side. He was running out to throw the bomb farther away when Lieut. Foy stopped him by tripping him up and dragged him to safety.

By these repeated acts of gallantry Lieut. Foy undoubtedly saved the men concerned from serious injury or death.’

Lieutenant Clifford Foy was additionally entitled to the British War and Victory Medals.
