William Lyons was born at Ballyhunis, Co. Mayo and originally enlisted in the Coldstream Guards at Leeds in October 1899. Remaining at home, he transferred to the Irish Guards and was placed on the Army Reserve in October 1902. Re-engaged in September 1911, he was mobilised in August 1914 and went to France in the same month, but was evacuated home after being wounded in the right wrist in the following month. Lyons returned to the Front in August 1915 but returned to the U.K. just two months later and was discharged to the Army Reserve in August 1917, very probably as a result of his old wound.
