The Society’s 1st type Marine Medals were awarded for the period 1840 - 67.
‘Daniel Morgan, boatman, plunged into the River Mersey to the assistance of a female who had fallen in, put a lifebuoy over her and thus supporting her, got her safely on shore - a monetary award.’ (24th Annual Report).
Also in the same report it is stated, ‘As Morgan has been to the Society several times and has saved 9 lives by jumping into the river to their assistance, the plain Silver Medal has been awarded to him.’
The medal to boatman Daniel Morgan was one of 11 silver medals awarded for the year 1863; a further two medals were awarded in gold.
